19 Jul 2002 - Bryngwyn Matters Special Edition

Year 11 Prom.

The year 11 Prom was held on Friday 26th April at the Tree Tops Country Club in Swansea. In all, over 100 pupils and 18 staff attended the prom; all were pleased by the excellent disco and buffet and the helpful manner of the staff. Fortunately the weather was dry which enabled the pupils and teachers to show off their stunning outfits without fear of them being ruined by rain. After much deliberation by the judges the prom King and Queen, Prom Prince and Princess were decided. At the end of the night, everyone agreed it had been a wonderful evening and they had thoroughly enjoyed themselves, (For pictures visit the schoolwebsite: www. Bryngwynschool.ik.org)

Music to our ears by Phillip Lewis.

On April 12th 2002 Bryngwyn School arranged a trip for pupils and teachers to see "a great musical masterpiece of storytelling" (Sunday Times, 4 June 2000) in the Palace Theatre in London's West End. Cameron Mackintosh's superb production of Boublil and Schonberg's legendary musical Les Miserables has indisputably become the world's most popular musical, having been seen by over 50 million people.
From its celebrated opening in London in October 1985, this stunning adaptation of Victor Hugo's epic masterpiece, with lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer, immediately captured the imagination and enthusiasm of the theatre public. Les Miserables had already been performed in 28 countries, 192 cities and sung in 17 different languages.
Having won awards all over the world, including an unprecedented eight Broadway Tony awards, Les Miserables has earned itself a unique place in musical history. Around the globe, night after night, tens of thousands of people are swept away by the power, the passion and the triumph of human spirit that is Les Miserables.
Setting off at 6:30 am and after a 4 hour journey they finally got to London. They spent about 3 hours shopping around Covent Garden and then at 2:30 they sat down to watch a most dazzling, lively and amazing musical! Full of comedy, tragedy and romance, Los Miserables was superbly performed with extremely talented actors and actresses. It was an incredible day out! Another such visit is planned for the end of July.

Little Shop of Horrors

Following the success of 'The Rocky Monster Show" last October, Bryngwyn School produced their second successful show in a year. Pupils from every year group in the school have been selected to act, sing or dance in a production of "Little Shop of Horrors". There was no problem selecting pupils backstage or on stage as their enthusiasm, commitment and their talent was outstanding.
As we all know, "Little Shop of Horrors" is a musical black comedy which required some of Bryngwyn's finest singers. Chiffon, Ronnette and Crystal are the trio of singers who give a running commentary throughout the show. The play was enjoyed by all including the year six pupils, who saw the play on Tuesday and Thursday. Just like the "Rocky Monster Show" both audience and performers thoroughly enjoyed each performance.

Americans Visit Bryngwyn

On Wednesday 19th June, Bryngwyn was pleased to welcome two Americans to its RE department for the day. Ms. Brandy Ussery, from Arkansas, and Ms. Misty Rumbo, from Texas, were both here on behalf of the International Mission Board and were accompanied by Reverend Haskell from Llangennech. They took part in a discussion about religion and some games based on religion in Miss Loader's lesson. Everyone agreed it was a welcome interlude to the school day.

Happy Campers

Under the leadership of Mrs A Owen, 22 pupils from year 10 took part in a practice outdoor expedition over in the Northern part of the Gower. The aim, of the expedition, was to enlighten the pupils on what the final expedition is going to be like. The final expedition was held on the 13th and 14th of July, this time in the Southern part of the Gower. As expected, all pupils were exhausted by the end of the first day. On the final day, pupils and teachers had to be awake by 6:30 am. As a result of the target times being this early, the majority of the pupils finished at approximately 3:45 p.m. All 22 pupils, boys and girls, thoroughly enjoyed the experience of living a weekend of bare necessities.

New Technology Suite

Due to new national curriculum orders, all schools must now teach computer aided design and manufacture as part of certain technology courses. Since Bryngwyn doesn't currently have the facilities for the equipment that is required for these processes, a new technology suite is being built. The room that is currently being built adjacent to Mr Wyn Jones' room will be a clean room for the use of electronics and kits and it will contain a large interactive whiteboard which can be linked to computers to demonstrate how to use the equipment. It will also contain some of the new equipment, though the majority of it will be placed in a CAD (computer aided design) CAM (computer aided manufacture) room, which will be located in the room between Mr. Jones room and Mr Baden Jones' room where the resource room is currently located. This room will contain equipment used for CAD and CAM as well as equipment used for PLC, which is used for programming microchips to operate motors or sensors.
It is hoped that the rooms will be usable by September.

Llongyfarchiadau ! Thomas Platt of Year 9 has won a competition in 'law! Magazine. His prize was a Welsh pocket dictionary.

Congratulations to Aaron Alldrit of class 9-1 on winning a bronze medal in the high jump at the Welsh Schools Athletics Championships held at Brecon on Saturday 6th July 2002. Also, competing that day was Genna Jones from year 8. She came 4th, in both the 200m and the relay races.

Cricket
The Year 7 boys cricket team have beaten Coedcae's cricket team. Hopefully, the team can go on to defeat the Ysgol Y Strade team which will earn them a place in the county final.

Barcelona

With the help of Miss. J.Thomas, Mr. B. Jones (CO-Organisers), Miss. H.Dagless and Mr. G. Thomas pupils from Year 9 and 10 were given the opportunity to visit one of Europe's hottest countries. Spain! The aim of the visit was to enable young enthusiasts to appreciate the works of some of the greatest pieces of art in Europe. Also, pupils were given the chance of receiving first hand experience of different cultures, languages and diets.
Their hotel was located in Castelldefels, near the capital, Barcelona. The pupils, 29 from Year 9 and 5 from Year 10, were rewarded for their behaviour by receiving a chance to relax by the hotel's swimming pool followed by a walk along the beach, all of which the pupils and staff enjoyed. Tuesday was used as a day of visiting. The party spent 3 hours at the Park Guell and its Museum, which is famous for the architectural work of Gaudi. During this visit, the pupils were given free time to explore the beauty of the park. A short visit to the Olympic Stadium followed by an organised tour of the Nou Camp football Stadium. Home to one of the greatest football teams in Europe, Barcelona! Included in the tour were visits to the changing rooms, the pitch side, the Directors' box in the stand and the Museum.
The pupils had a full day at Port Aventura. Port Aventura is a much larger version of Oakwood. With only two days left, pupils were given time to go on shopping sprees, which they thoroughly enjoyed.
Finally, the teachers would just like to say a big thank you to all the pupils who went. They were extremely well behaved, which made the trip more enjoyable.

Buttering up Year 9

Year 9 finished the year with a food tasting session. The croissants and baguettes were a big hit but not everyone was quite so sure about Brie, Camembert or Roquefort, Gruyere and St Augur cheeses. The general consensus of opinion was that they were very different from Cheddar or Caerphilly. Everyone agreed that bread and butter - be it Welsh or French is always popular.

We hope you enjoy holidays and return when school resumes September 4th.
