Cymraeg/Welsh - Yr Urdd
YR URDD
This year is promising to be yet another busy one for the Urdd in school.
On October 12 we invited representatives from the Urdd camp at Glan-Llyn in North Wales to give a presentation toYear 7 pupils in the drama hall. They explained what activities are available at the camp and how pupils can apply to go in the summer of 2002. They brought with them a 'wal ddringo' which was set up in the school tennis courts. The PE and Welsh departments classes were able to use the wall during the morning's lessons.
On November 14, the Urdd district swimming gala took place at Llanelli Leisure Centre. Bryngwyn have experienced success at both local, count and national levels in the past and two of our swimmers are actually Welsh champions - Michael Howells in 1997 and Rachel Evans in 2000. We hope to have a really strong team taking part again this year and all swimmers whether members of club or not were asked to contact Mr. Roberts before half term to register interest.
On February 13, 2002 we went on our annual weekend visit to the Urdd camp at Llangrannog, West Wales. This is a very popular weekend and demand is always very high for places.
During the months after Christmas, preparations will be underway for the district and county Urdd Eisteddfodau. Bryngwyn has a long tradition of competing and winning in many events from musical to art and craft. Miss Rhisiart will be organising the Welsh stage competitions and Mr. Roberts, the Welsh home competitions. If you can play a musical instrument or sing, see Mr. G. Jones in the music department. Miss J. Thomas will tell you about the art and craft competitions and the PE department have details of the dance and gymnastics competitions. There are home competitions which involve maths and scientific skills and technology competitions as well. Anyone interested, please see Mr. Roberts asap.
At this time of the year as well, the PE department will be co-ordinating participation in the Urdd sporting competitions. Bryngwyn have been national champions at netball in the past and we have also done well in other sports. For netball and hockey, please see Mrs. Davies or Miss Taylor. For soccer and rugby, please see Mr. Owen or Mr. Jones.
In April, 2002 the Urdd is once again organising the prestigious National Welsh Schools Rugby Sevens tournament. The competition will be held at Llanelli RFC's Parc Y Strade. Mr. Terry Jones is the person to contact if you are interested in competing.
Urdd club meets regularly in D8 during the lunch hour where you can play Welsh language computer games, listen to Welsh CDs and watch Welsh videos. During the year we hope to be able to invite a number of Welsh personalities to talk to members about their life and work.
To take advantage of the above activities, you need to join the Urdd. Annual membership is £4.50 and entitles you to take part in any Urdd activity and attend any of the Urdd camps at designated times during the year.
Please see Mr. Roberts for a letter.
