Cymraeg/Welsh Department Year 7 Information

Pupil Groupings

Pupils are taught in their normal groups. Setting takes place at the start of year 8.

What is taught

The course is based on five themes: Greetings and introductions; my family and friends; my home and area; my school; my hobbies and leisure time. Each pupil completes a project on one of the above themes at the end of the school year. Pupils follow a class reader - Bryngolau - at various stages during the year.
Homework

Homework is set once a week. It could take the form of written work, preparation, research, learning or comprehension.

How progress is assessed

Regular end of theme assessments every half term are based on the three attainment targets for Key Stage 3: speaking - 40%; reading- 20%; writing - 40%. Pupils are given a percentage mark, national curriculum level and homework grade. Each pupil also completes a self assessment sheet every half term.
Other Information

Possible ways that parents could help their children could include: subscribing to a Welsh learners' magazine such as IAW; purchasing a dictionary such as an Oxford Welsh dictionary of Gair I Gall; purchasing recommended readers (e.g. from Llyfrau Ddraig, in town): watching welsh language programmes with subtitles, - teletext 888 - on S4C, such as Pobl Y Cwm; or listening to 'Catchphrase' on Radio Wales.
