English Department Year 7 Information
Pupil Groupings
Pupils are taught in mixed ability groups, though some pupils will have particular special needs and others will benefit from progressing at a slower pace than
average. Both of these groups will be catered for outside the main groupings.
What is taught
The Key Skills in this subject - speaking, listening, reading and writing - are integral to the course.
Pupils will study a variety of novels, poetry and the Shakespeare play 'Twelfth Night'.
Pupils are encouraged to produce creative writing and other extended writing tasks including newspaper articles, reports and leters. Spelling is taught through word
families and spelling rules.
Attention is given to technical accuracy and pupils are required to complete corrections.
They are introduced to the library and they are requested to read two books from a set list every term.
Homework
Homework is set once a week and a minimum of five written homework exercises are set per half term.
How progress is assessed
Reading and written work is regularly assessed using mark schemes which relate to Key Stage Three levels of assessment. An end of year examination covers the
entire content of the year and is assessed according to the same Key Stage Three criteria.
