English Year 8 Information

Pupil groupings
Pupils are taught in 2 parallel bands in which
there is setting across the band. There is also
provision for learners who require more intensive tuition, and for
?Special Needs? pupils. Setting is based on an end of course
examination in year 7 but is monitored throughout the year.


What is taught
The Key Skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing are further
developed. Pupils are introduced to and study a wide variety of
genres in poetry, fiction and non-fiction. They study 2 novels, one of
which is by a Welsh author with a Welsh setting. They study
Shakespeare?s ?A Midsummer Night?s Dream?. Pupils are encouraged
to write imaginatively and in a variety of forms. Spelling is taught
systematically throughout the year, focusing on spelling rules.


Homework
A minimum of one homework per week is set.


How progress is assessed
Progress is assessed by regular marking of Reading and Writing
assignments using NC marking guidelines. Summer examinations
provide a final standardised assessment.
