English Year 9 Information

Pupil groupings

As a result of examinations sat in year 8, pupils are set according to ability.

What is taught

Year 9 pupils will develop higher order reading skills, particularly analysis, addressing such questions as 'How is tension created?' In selected passages. They study a variety of poetry, media texts, a pre-twentieth century novel, a selection of short stories and a Shakespeare play. Pupils learn to use a variety of literary techniques and structures in their own writing. They develop the skill of information retrieval and have the opportunity to use desk top publishing. ICT is also used to develop pupils' ability to write for different audiences and purposes and in a range of formats.
Homework

A minimum of one homework per week is set. Anyone not completing homework persistently is required to attend English club Tuesday after school for one hour.

How progress is assessed

Regular tests in all skill areas are set throughout the year which result in a final teacher assessed level. Summative assessment consists of the external SAT and an end of course Literature examination.
