Vocational General Certificates of Secondary Education (VGCSE's)

Vocational General Certificates of Secondary Education (VGCSE's) have been designed to widen participation in vocationally-related learning. Pre-16. open up new progression routes post-16. raise levels of attainment and to enhance the image of vocational education.

VGCSE's are vocationally-related qualifications which are equivalent to GCSE grades A* - G. They support progression into further education, training or employment.


Each VGCSE consists of three units and is equivalent to two GCSEs (Double Award). The three units are assessed by one method which may be either a portfolio of evidence or an external test. The external assessment contributes 33% to the final grade with internal assessment contributing 67%.


VGCSE in Health and Social Care (Double Award)

The VGCSE in Health and Social Care has been designed to provide a broad educational basis for further training, further education or for moving into employment within the health or social care sector. This is achieved by ensuring that students develop the general skills, knowledge and understanding needed within the sector.

The qualification consists of three units:
Unit 1: Health, Social Care and early years provision.
Unit 2: Promoting health and well-being.
Unit 3: Understanding personal development and relationships.

For VGCSE, Unit 1 requires an assignment on how the needs of two individuals from two different client groups may be met by service providers in the local area.
Unit 2 is assessed by portfolio work in the form of a health plan for improving or maintaining the physical health and well being of an individual.
Unit 3 is assessed through an external test of 1.5 hours.
GCSE Home Economics (Child Development)

GCSE Home Economics (Child Development) will provide pupils with an opportunity to learn about the development and acare of children from conception to the age of five years. The course promotes an understanding of the social, emotional, physical and intellectual development of the child which is inter-linked throught the study of the family, community and the responsibilities of parenthood.

Course Content

Candidates must study four compulsory core areas:-

1. Social Background and Development
2. Food for Health
3. Physical Development
4. Intellectual Development

Assessment
Candidates will be assessed by an end of course theory paper, a board prescribed task and coursework.

Board-prescribed task - 30%
One task set by the board and carried out in class time.
