Pupils are taught in mixed ability groups except those who have particular needs.
What is taught
In this introduction to physical, human and environment geography, pupils use sketch maps, atlases and photographs. Pupils will develop map skills, learning to use grid references and establish directions, distances, symbols and height of land. They will also learn about the weather and climate by observing and recording local conditions and by looking at the patterns of temperature and rainfall in Britain together with the factor which affects climate and pressure systems.The topic on water covers the water cycle, river basins, flooding and supplies of fresh water, while that on settlements, covers types, locations and changes in settlements, the uses of lands and the benefits and problems which develop. The topic on transport deals with different types of transport, networks and their benefits and problems and the topic on regions compares the area of South Wales with London and the South East of England.

Homework is intended to occupy to approximately 30 minutes per week.
How progress is assessed.
All classwork and homework activities are marked according to a common marked scheme and the results are recorded. Pupils take a test at the end of each unit of work and an end of year examination covers the entire work for the year.
