MATHEMATICS K.S. 4
The syllabus sets out to assess what candidates KNOW, UNDERSTAND and CAN DO, enabling them to demonstrate their full potential.
The Mathematics assessment objectives are:
AO 1: Using and Applying Mathematics
AO 2: Number and Algebra
AO 3: Shape, Space and Measures
AO 4: Handling Data
Scheme of Assessment
The scheme of assessment will include terminal written papers and Coursework
The weighting will be as follows:
Terminal written papers 80%; Coursework 20%.
The written papers will assess Assessment Objectives 1, 2, 3, 4.
The coursework will assess Assessment Objective 1, 4.
The weighting of the assessment objectives will be as follows:
AO1 External Assessment 10% Internal Assessment 10%
AO2 External Assessment 40% Internal Assessment 0%
AO3 Exernal Assessment 20% Internal Assessment 0%
AO4 External Assessment 10% Internal Assessment 10%
Tiers of Entry
There will be three overlapping tiers of entry:
Tier - GCSE Grades Awarded
HIGHER - A*, A, B, C,
INTERMEDIATE - B, C, D, E
FOUNDATION - D, E, F, G
N.B. Pupils will be entered at the appropriate tier as a result of their performance at K.S.3.
Written Papers (External Assessment)
In each tier there will be two written papers each carrying 100 marks. Papers 1 and 2 will BOTH assess number and algebra, shape, space and measures and handling data.
A calculator is allowed on PAPER 2 only.
The following table gives the syllabus content and duration of each paper.
PAPERS 1 & 2 -
HIGHER - 2 hours duratin
INTERMEDIATE - 2 hours duration
FOUNDATION - 1.5 hours duration
Coursework (Internal Assessment) 20%
Candidates will be required to submit two investigative tasks.
One will assess 'Using and Applying Mathematics' and will be set in a context provided by the subject content of AO2, AO3 and the second will assess 'Handling Data.?'
Entry Level Mathematics
Those pupils who are at Levels 1-3 on the National Curriculum scale will be entered for the Entry Level course.
Scheme of Assessment
Assessment objective 1 will be assessed by means of Specific Tasks. Tasks may be done at any time in the classroom. Performance is assessed in 3 skill areas, namely decision-making, communication and reasoning.
The other assessment objectives are assessed by means of Stage Tests (i.e. Bronze, Silver, Gold). To demonstrate competence in a stage test, at least 80% of the marks must have been gained. Use of calculators is not allowed in stage tests. The tests are given at an appropriate time for each student, undertaken in normal classroom conditions and have no time limit.
There are 3 versions for each stage, for students who are unsuccessful on their first or second attempts.
Pupils who achieve Gold Awards may progress to Foundation GCSE.
