Mathematics Year 7 Information

Pupil groupings.

Pupils are set on entry based on Key Stage 2 results and our own numeracy tests. All pupils follow the same topics to a
level appropriate to their set. Movement between sets is then possible as the children make progress at their own
individual rate.

What is Taught.

The subject is taught as modules:

MODULE 1 involves statistics; number patterns; symmetry and 2-dimensional shapes.

MODULE 2 involves decimals; probability and algebra.

MODULE 3 covers fractions and percentages; averages, angles and directions.

MODULE 4 deals with negative numbers; solving equations; area and perimeter.

MODULE 5 involves estimating; 3-dimensional shapes and scale drawing.

There are three practical investigations to be carried out during the year, to encourage and develop problem solving skills.

Homework.

Homework is set at a minimum of one hour per week. There is one common homework exercise for all sets for every
topic and pupils are required to revise thoroughly for their 'module tests'.

How progress is assessed.

Assessment at the end of end of each module is supported by frquent numeracy tests, followed by two end of year
examinations, one covering the content of the five modules, the other being a final numeracy test for the year.
