Mathematics Year 8 Information

Pupil groupings

Pupils are set based on the results of the year 7
module tests and the end of year examinations.
All pupils follow the same topics to a level
appropriate to their set so that movement
between sets is possible as the children make
progress at their own individual rate.

What is taught

The subject is taught as modules
MODULE ONE involves number work; algebra and statistics.
MODULE TWO involves circumference of a circle; percentages +
fractions and trial and improvement. MODULE THREE involves
angles; probability and negative numbers. MODULE FOUR deals
with area; straight line graphs and statistics, while MODULE FIVE
involves ratio; algebra(inequalities); volume and intersecting lines.
There are three practical investigations to be carried out during the
year, to encourage and develop problem solving skills.

Homework

Homework is set at a minimum of one hour per week. Pupils are
required to revise thoroughly for their ?module tests?.
Each term an investigation project is set which is normally completed
for homework.

How progress is assessed

Assessment at the end of each module is supported by frequent
numeracy tests, followed by two end of year examinations, covering
the content of the five modules.
