Physical Education Department Year 10 Information
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
Physical Education has traditionally been a non-examinable subject on the School curriculum. However, with an increased emphasis on employment in the Leisure Sector, i.e. Leisure Centres in particular, a GCSE certificate in Physical Education has become a valuable qualification which can lead on to 'A' level Physical Education and Sports Science courses taken at CCTA Graig Campus and Gorseinon College.
The GCSE course is intended to encourage the purposeful and enjoyable practice and study of Physical Education.
Assessment Content
Practical 60% of the marks coursework
Theory 40% of the marks 2 x 1.5 hr theory exams
Theory
i. Paper I - 1.5 hrs 20% of the total GCSE mark.
A series of compulsory questions based on video extracts to test candidates' knowledge and understanding of Physical Fitness and Sport in Contemporary Society.
ii. Paper II - 1.5 hrs 20% of the total GCSE mark.
A series of compulsory questions based on video extracts to test candidates' knowledge and understanding of Fitness Testing, Effects of Exercise, Training/Nutrition/Hydration on the Body's Systems and the Acquisition of Skill including the Psychological Factors Influencing Performance.
Practical - 60% of the total GCSE mark
Candidates must offer Error! Bookmark not defined. for assessment - 15% for each activity.
· the four activities can be chosen from the Sport column with a maximum of three from any individual activity e.g. a maximum of three games or a maximum of three gymnastic activities;
· a maximum of three activities can be chosen from either the Dance or the Adventurous Activities column.
· one of the choices can be either an exercise activity e.g. a circuit training or combination of exercise activities e.g. weight training and aerobics.
SPORT (Competitive focus)
Games e.g. soccer, rugby, netball, basketball, hockey, lacrosse, badminton, table tennis, tennis, squash, volleyball, cricket, baseball or rounders, bowls, golf, water polo.
Gymnastic activities e.g. Olympic, rhythmix, thematic, aerobatics, martial arts, trampolining, diving.
Swimming e.g. swimming & life saving.
Athletics e.g. track & Field, cross country, weight lifting.
DANCE (Artistic & aesthetic focus)
Folk e.g. Welsh
Historical e.g. Minuet, Paranne
Theatrical e.g. Jazz
Social e.g. ballroom, square dance
ADVENTUROUS ACTIVITIES (Outdoor learning focus)
e.g. hill walking, rock climbing, sailing, canoeing, skiing, water skiing, wind surfing, life saving, horse riding, surfing.
EXERCISE ACTIVITIES (Non-competition exercise)
e.g. Weight training, circuit training step aerobics, aerobics, jogging, running, rowing.
N.B.
Candidates can offer a miximum of two off-site activities for assessment. Evidence for these can be either in video form or by keeping a diary of attendance.
The practical coursework is moderated internally by the Physical Education Staff and then checked by an External Moderator at the end of Year 11 - usually before Easter.
Aims of the Course
The general aims of this course are to encourage candidates to improve:
i. their ability to plan, perform and evaluate physical activities;
ii their knowledge, skills and understanding of a broad range if relevant physical activities.
their awareness of the significance if sport and physical exercise in contemporary society.
iv. their knowledge and understanding of the different factors that affect participation and performance and demonstrate their relationship.
A qualification in Physical Education gives a good impression to any employer as it demonstrates a prospective employee's ability to:
i. inter-relate with others in co-operative team work;
ii assess and appreciate strengths and weaknesses in both their own and others' abilities;
iii appreciate the value of following rules and the benefits of fair play;
iv understand the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.
